The Secret Weapon Against Workplace Discrimination

"Dr. Malik, you're so well-spoken! It's impressive how articulate you are." Learn How Healthcare Professionals Tackle Microaggressions Head-On

Okay ladies and gentlemen, by now you know that I am passionate about how people of color are respected in the healthcare industry. Well today, I’ve got a couple of scenarios with responses that can be used when faced with those little subtle microaggressions. So, take your time and read through how these two common situations were resolved. This is, of course, fictional characters and a fictional hospital, but the lesson and tips are golden.

Story Time

In the bustling city of Medville, there stood a renowned healthcare institution called Unity Hospital. It boasted cutting-edge medical breakthroughs and a diverse workforce dedicated to providing exceptional care. However, even within the walls of Unity Hospital, microaggressions targeting African American professionals occasionally marred the inclusive atmosphere they sought to cultivate.

Meet Dr. Malik Thompson, a brilliant African American physician, passionately serving the hospital’s cardiology department. Driven by his commitment to both saving lives and fostering an environment of respect, Malik found himself facing a microaggression one day during a team meeting, courtesy of a senior colleague, Dr. Peterson.

Dr. Peterson: “Malik, you’re so well-spoken! It’s impressive how articulate you are.”

Taken aback, Malik paused to gather his thoughts, remembering the advice imparted by Unity Hospital’s diversity and inclusion committee. He resolved to respond assertively and professionally, aiming to establish an even more inclusive atmosphere for all staff members.

Malik: “Thank you, Dr. Peterson. I appreciate your acknowledgment. As an African American professional, it’s important to me to challenge stereotypes and promote diversity. Being articulate is not an exception but rather a common attribute among professionals from all backgrounds.”

Dr. Peterson, suddenly aware of the impact of his words, felt a pang of remorse and recognized an opportunity for personal growth.

Dr. Peterson: “Malik, I apologize. My comment unintentionally perpetuated stereotypes, and I understand now how it may have been hurtful. I appreciate your perspective, and I’ll strive to be more conscious of my language moving forward.”

Malik: “Thank you, Dr. Peterson. I believe that together, we can foster a respectful and inclusive environment where everyone’s unique skills and experiences are valued.”

News of Malik’s assertive response spread throughout Unity Hospital like wildfire. Other African American healthcare professionals, inspired by his poise, felt empowered to address similar situations with grace and professionalism.

Days later, Dr. Simone Lewis, an accomplished African American surgeon, encountered a similar microaggression while conversing with a patient’s family member.

Family Member: “Are you the surgeon? I was expecting someone else.”

Remembering Malik’s example, Simone decided to respond assertively and professionally, championing a more inclusive environment for everyone.

Simone: “Yes, I am Dr. Lewis, the surgeon assigned to your loved one’s case. I am highly skilled and committed to providing the best care possible. If you have any concerns, I’m here to address them.”

The family member, startled by the impact of their assumption, recognized the microaggression and the significance of treating healthcare professionals with respect, regardless of their background.

Family Member: “Dr. Lewis, I apologize for my presumption. My comment was unwarranted, and I have complete faith in your abilities. Thank you for the care you’re providing.”

Simone: “Thank you for acknowledging that. We all have biases, but through open dialogue and understanding, we can cultivate a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.”

Inspired by the actions of Dr. Thompson and Dr. Lewis, the African American healthcare professionals at Unity Hospital actively confronted and addressed microaggressions. Leveraging scripts provided by the hospital’s diversity and inclusion committee, they tailored them to suit their unique circumstances. Through open conversations and heightened awareness, they forged a path towards a workplace that celebrated diversity and inclusion, transcending the boundaries of race and ethnicity.

With each assertive response, the African American healthcare professionals at Unity Hospital initiated a transformative wave that extended far beyond their immediate surroundings, inspiring individuals across various industries to challenge microaggressions and pave the way for a more inclusive society.

Now, in a perfect world both you and I know this IS NOT how things work in real life, but every little action we take individually helps the next person of color in a small way.
